Citytv Vancouver Airs No One Ever Suspects the Chinese Guy

Citytv Vancouver will air No One Ever Suspects the Chinese Guy on Friday, February 6 at 8:00 pm. The movie marks the first broadcast of the CineCity: Vancouver's Stories initiative where Aboriginal or Visible Minority BC Filmmakers, who qualify under the guidelines for funding, submitted original, dramatic projects for consideration.

In 2002, seven projects were awarded funding. No One Ever Suspects the Chinese Guy kicks off a series of hour-long shows with the film and a post-film commentary. Citytv's Prem Gill will lead the discussion with the filmmakers and actors: producer Robin Chan, writer/actor Henry J. Mah and director, Scott Owen.

In No One Ever Suspects the Chinese Guy, the filmmakers play with the stereotypes surrounding Asian people. Johnny Chan is a mild-mannered insurance salesman who suddenly snaps and goes on a killing spree after being confronted with racism. The irony comes when the police do not suspect Johnny because of his race and he's overlooked as a suspect.

CineCity: Vancouver's Stories is part of Citytv's support for the local film community. Citytv will support each one through development and production and ultimately broadcast the finished short films during prime time. All CineCity projects are closed captioned and video described.

The initiative also represents CHUM Television's overall commitment to the Canadian film industry. CHUM's commitment as a development-funder and market-maker for domestic productions makes the company Canada's number-one private, over-the-air broadcast supporter for Canadian feature films.

The remaining 2002 projects will air throughout 2004. The four projects chosen in 2003 will begin airing in January 2005. All projects represent a wide range of background and voices of Vancouver filmmakers. Call for submissions for 2004 will take place next fall.

Citytv Vancouver, Cable 13, is the newest member of the CHUM Television family.
