Trademarks of China: Nationalism, Self Exoticism and Nouvelle Chinoiserie in Contemporary Chinese Art

Presented by
Francesca Dal Lago, Assistant Professor in Art History and Communications, McGill University, Montreal

Francesca dal Lago's lecture Trademarks of China: Nationalism, Self-Exoticism and Nouvelle Chinoiserie in Contemporary Chinese Art is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Wang Qingsong: Present Day Epics. This solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Chinese artist Wang Qingsong unites for the first time in Canada a significant selection of very large format photographs. Playful in his dissection of photojournalism for both its historic significance and its recent reinterpretation in many contemporary art practices, Wang Qingsong represents the economic mutations of the modern-day People's Republic of China – namely its introduction into a market economy – through battle scenes between the rival icons of socialism and the Western world's brand of capitalism. His monumental prints refer to 19th century French historical painting while aligning themselves with the tradition of Chinese narrative dynastic painting.
