280 East Cordova Street, Vancouver
Nuit blanche, the Dora Mavor Moore nominated production from inventive Toronto-based company Corpus, features six insomniacs who use dance, physical theatre and comedy to peer at the edge of sleep where reality, desire, fantasy and fear merge. Rated as one of the best shows of 2002 by both the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, Nuit blanche is presented in Vancouver as part of the Firehall Arts Centre’s 2003-2004 season. Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. from Wednesday, January 28 to Saturday, January 31, with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova, Vancouver.
Nuit blanche was called by the Globe and Mail "a brilliant mix of dance, clown and storytelling ……Nuit blanche shines in visual surprises. Its many delights are almost impossible to describe in words. They have to be seen to be really appreciated." The National Post said, "Nuit blanche has an irresistibly ingenious charm …… a clever concept …… the standing ovation that ensued was more than deserved."
Nuit blanche, which translates from the idiomatic French as ‘sleepless night’, features the Corpus artistic directors Sylvie Bouchard and David Danzon with dancers Amy Hampton, Ray Hogg, Keiko Ninomiya and Carla Soto.
Corpus was born in 1997 when dancer/choreographer Bouchard and actor/director Danzon merged their considerable talents. The company is known to Vancouver audiences through Dusk Dances, the outdoor dance event in Stanley Park, co-produced since 2000 with the Dancing on the Edge Festival. In 2001, Corpus represented Canada in the Street Theatre competition at the IV Games of la Franchophonie in Hull, Québec, and won the gold medal with the hit, A Flock of Flyers. That work, seen in Vancouver’s Dusk Dances, has also toured to the Bénin Theatre Festival, West Africa, La Fira Street Theatre Festival in Tarrega, Spain and across Canada. Corpus was the recipient of the 2002 Prix Hommage for Arts awarded by the Féderation Culturelle Canadienne Française.
