PHOTO COLLAGE REPRESENTS CHINESE SAILORS CONTRIBUTION TO CANADA

Rear Admiral Jean Yves Forcier, Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) will present a photo collage to the Chinese Canadian Military Museum in Vancouver Chinatown on Thursday. The 26-inch by 22-inch display depicting over sixty years of service by Chinese Canadians in the Canadian Navy will be given to retired lieutenant colonel Howe Lee, President of the Museum during a short visit by the Admiral at 2:30 p.m.

Photographs of the Second World War Corvette HMCS Calgary and the new frigate of the same name, are surrounded by two Chinese Canadian sailors of the past, and seven sailors of Chinese ancestry currently serving with MARPAC. Lieut.William Lore of Victoria, B.C. was the first Chinese Canadian in the Royal Canadian Navy and the first Chinese officer in the Commonwealth. He was the first Canadian to go ashore in Hong Kong when it was liberated from the Japanese Forces towards the end of World War Two. Evelyn Lui was the first Chinese Canadian to enroll at Vancouver’s Naval Reserve Division HMCS Discovery in 1951. The currently serving personnel are Lt.-Cmdr. Dave Wong, Lieut(N). Beth Lei, Capt. Eugene Tang, Sub-Lieut. Francis Leung, Acting Sub-Lieut. Mo King Low, Petty Officer 1st Class Kam Way Leong, and Master Seaman Galeung Lau.

A small plaque is engraved, “Chinese Canadians standing on guard for thee in the past, present and future” presented to Howe Lee and the Chinese Canadian Military Museum by Rear Admiral J.Y. Forcer, Commander, Maritime Forces Pacific.
