Walter T. Sunahara: LAST VISIONS
October 16 - November 27, 2004
Hours: Thursday to Sunday 12 to 5 pm
Opening Reception
Saturday, October 16, 2004. 2 – 4 p.m
This exhibition of painting and collages by the late Walter Toshiyuki Sunahara brings together the culmination of a lifelong study and art practice. Through his works, he was able to externalize his dreams and memories and pay homage to the major themes of his life, drawing elements from the natural world and intertwining these motifs with personal observations. The works are inclusive and unique, completed prior to his passing and have never been shown in public.
According to Bryce Kanbara, “Last Visions strengthen the burgeoning history of Japanese Canadian culture by illuminating the contributions of a extremely rare individual - a nisei artist. Walter Sunahara was widely recognized as an influential arts administrator and community animator, he sustained an important life-long art practice and his work deserves to be seen, thought-about and valued. The material ingredients of his compositions hold muted stories of their own. They are the sturdily drawn, printed and glued manifestations of a distinctively noble Japanese Canadian art practice.”
