ARTIST'S TALK BY ED PIEN

in conjunction with the exhibition Celestial Bodies
Sunday 23 January, 2:30 pm
Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Ed Pien presents "Imaginary Beings," an illustrated lecture tracing the evolution of his work. The artist will show images and objects he has gathered in his research, and how these have influenced the nature of his art. Pien, a Toronto-based artist born in Taiwan, is the Koerner Visiting Artist in the Department of Art at Queen's University this month. A reception follows.

EXHIBITION
on view to 30 January

Celestial Bodies is a multi-sensorial installation -- created for the Art Centre's Davies Foundation Gallery -- that conjures fearful, otherworldly and ecstatic states. Pien's layered-tissue environment uses video projection and sound in combination with the visceral lyricism of drawings based on mythical beings. The enormous canopy of backlit drawings is suspended in a horizontal wave across the gallery, setting up incidental air movement that amplifies the work's aesthetic charge. Pien's reputation for superb draftsmanship and inventive staging is fully borne out in this not-to-miss exhibition.

Program supported by the Department of Art, Queen's University, the Koerner Foundation, The Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.
