TORONTO PREMIERE!
REPATRIATION
Director: Kim Dong-won
South Korea 2003 149 minutes Video

Saturday, February 5 at 8:15 p.m.

REPATRIATION was awarded the Freedom of Expression Award at the 2004 Sundance Film festival. In the spring of 1992, filmmaker Kim Dong-won met with “unconverted prisoners,” North Koreans convicted thirty-years earlier of spying on the South who yet refused to relinquish their ideological beliefs, resulting in their prolonged torture and incarceration. Even upon their eventual release, the prisoners remained “unconverted” and were prohibited from returning to their homes in the North, until relations between the two states began to improve. Dong-won followed this colourful group of men for ten years, delving into their opinions and humbling stories of survival and adaptation to inhumane treatment – his exhaustive efforts have yielded a record of their lives culled together from five hundred hours of filming and twelve years of production. The film’s detailed observations of several extraordinary individuals’ experiences is an emotional testimonial which illuminates the contentious history of conflict between North and South Korea.
