The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC) invites all to view the exceptional transparent watercolour paintings by artists from across Canada, Holland and Malaysia, as were selected from over three hundred entrants for this prestigious annual exhibition. Honorary guest David Aurandt, Executive Director of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, declared the official opening of Open Water 2004 at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery on Saturday, December 4th, 2004. Presentation of awards made to this year's winning recipients followed.
The top three Open Water 2004 Awards Winners are; The A.J. Casson Medal for Best Painting, won by Karen Wilson, of Maitland, Nova Scotia, for Green Dory. The Sam Black Award for Excellence in Transparent Watercolour, as sponsored by HK Holbein Inc., granted to Stephen Yau of Richmond Hill, Ontario, for Palace #15. The Curry's/Winsor Newton Award, won by Jim Tanner of Kelowna, British Columbia for Salmon Cleaning. There are a total of thirteen award recipients for outstanding works in this stellar showcase of sixty-nine exemplary transparent watercolours.
The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour was founded 1925 by twelve influential artists, including Fred Brigden and Group of Seven members Franklin Carmichael and A.J. Casson. For the last 79 years, this group has had the focused mandate to encourage watercolour excellence. As such, it is the only Society outside of the British Isles represented in the Royal Collection of her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle. Continuous quality exhibitions, symposiums and workshops are cornerstones of this organization of Canadian historical significance.
