Rabindranath Tagore: Renaissance Man

On Sunday, September 25, at 2pm, Rasik Arts is presenting "Rabindranath Tagore: Renaissance Man," a lecture by Dr. Kathleen O'Connell, illuminating the many facets of India's Nobel Poet Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindranath Tagore has been likened to Michelangelo, Goethe, and Claude Monet. The 1913 Nobel Prize winner composed his first poem at age eight, and, by the end of his life, had written over 25 volumes of poetry, 15 plays, 90 short stories, 11 novels and 13 volumes of essays. He composed over two thousand songs and created over two thousand paintings. Forty years of his life were dedicated to creating an alternative school system at Santiniketan to foster the creative personality. He was also an actor, singer, director-producer, religious commentator, political nationalist, cultural ambassador, and initiator of rural development projects. Truly, a 'Renaissance' man.

Enlivened by examples of Tagore's paintings, music, and readings in both Bengali and English by Dipak Mazumdar and Ishwar Mooljee, the lecture will take place at the Design Exchange, downtown Toronto, on the last day of their exhibit of Bollywood poster art. Tickets will be available at the door on Sunday (Sept 25), and admission includes the lecture, light refreshment, and a chance to view the exhibit before it closes.

The Design Exchange is located at 234 Bay Street, Toronto Dominion Centre, between King and Wellington. Admission is $10.
