Naoko Matsubara is one of the foremost Japanese woodcut artists. Born in Shikoku, Japan, she studied in Kyoto, at the Royal College of Art and at the Carnegie Institute on a Fulbright scholarship. Matsubara has lived in Canada since 1971. The prints in the current exhibition are from a series resulting from a trip to Tibet in 1986. Matsubara's work is in collections all over the world and in 2003 The Royal Ontario Museum mounted a 50 year survey of her work, now in the collection of the museum.
George A. Walker is an award winning wood engraver He is self taught influenced by Wesley Bates and Brender a Brandis, and by the books illustrated by Lynd Ward and Otto Nÿckel. He has taught book arts and printmaking at the OCAD since 1990. In 1985 he and his wife Michelle founded Columbus Street Press in 2000 renaming it Biting Dog Press. Walker's books and prints are in many collections including the National Library and The Canadian Embassy in Japan.
