Bridging Cultural Boundaries: Translating the Daoist Classic "Zhuangzi" Then and Now

About the talk:
An illustrated lecture on the place of the Daoist foundational classic
Zhuangzi in the Chinese tradition, a survey of its reception in the West,
and a look at a new translation based on and including the commentary of Guo
Xiang (252-312), which contributed terms and concepts that significantly
shaped the entire later tradition of Chinese thought.

About Richard John Lynn:
· Professor Emeritus, East Asian Studies, University of Toronto
· Distinguished Visiting Professor, Asian Studies, University of British
Columbia

Professor Lynn received his Ph.D. in Asian Languages from Stanford
University in 1971 and held positions at several universities in New
Zealand, Australia, the U.S.A. and Canada, finally serving as Professor of
Chinese thought and literature at the University of Toronto in the
Department of East Asian Studies, in which he is now Professor Emeritus.
His publications include:

Chinese Perspective (Princeton University Press, 1988).
