Asian Canadian Writers' Workshop The Asian Canadian Writers' Workshop (ACWW) has been in existence for over thirty years and can trace its origins to the late Sixties. Some of its original founding members included Paul Yee, Jim Wong-Chu, Sean Gunn, SKY Lee, and Rick Shiomi. Some members went on to establish "Pender Guy", and English-language Chinese Canadian radio program on Vancouver's CO-OP Radio from 1976 to 1981. The award winning program provided coverage of up-to-date events and issues in the community, as well as locally produced music, historical documentaries, and creative skits. In October 1995, ACWW evolved from a collective to become a non-profit organization. The ACWW has since seen many of its members produce important works and win major writing awards. Its membership can currently be found across Canada; the majority in Vancouver and representation in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. The mandate of the ACWW is to assist writers, artists, and performers in the publication or showcase of their work and talent. The ACWW provides a place for more established writers to guide emerging writers from a common Pacific Rim Asian heritage through the difficulties of the publishing field in a supportive and culturally sensitive environment. It is also committed to the accessing of new artistic and performing venues and relevant information on behalf of its members. Throughout the year, ACWW sponsors numerous literary readings, seminars and workshops. ACWW members also participate in Asian Heritage Month and ACWW is a supporting member of the Asian Heritage Month Society. ACWW assists in producing the award-winning Ricepaper Magazine - the Asian Canadian cultural arts magazine that is distributed nationally in Canada. ACWW members provide editorial contributions to Rice Paper. The ACWW also sponsors Asiancanadian.net - the Asian Canadian arts, literature and culture community website.
