Urban Forest

Tatar Gallery
From March 4 - April 10, 2004
Opening Thursday March 4th 6-8pm

Urban Forest is as much about how the urbanite perceives the forest as about the forest itself. This exhibit questions how we relate to the woods when we live in the cities. Yet, as humans exist both within the natural world and in relation to it, Urban Forest is also about how we experience our relationship with nature and the wilderness.

Curator James Robertson brings his interest in the abstracted and mythologized woods to the Tatar Gallery, grouping together artists from Amsterdam, Seoul, and Toronto in this unique exhibit. Through various media, the forest and the idea of the forest are probed and considered by a number of modern, urban artists.

This exhibition reconsiders the critical strategies of artists Lorna Brown, Margot Leigh Butler, Allyson Clay, Laiwan, Jin-me Yoon, and the collaborative groups Worksite and the Association for Noncommercial Culture in relation to shifts in feminist theory and practice during the 1980s. The exhibition focuses on book works, journal interventions, installations, and ephemera addressing the intersecting issues of gender, identity, language and representation.

Rejecting a notion of feminism as fixed, stable, and past, the title of this exhibition refers instead to multiple, diverse, and continually shifting investigations of differently gendered and racialized identities. In the 1980s and 1990s, activist groups representing provisional alignments of race, class, gender, and sexuality challenged the exclusionary biases of institutions including feminism and the mainstream art system. At the same time, a number of artists drew upon feminist, psychoanalytic and post-colonial theory in order to critique the dominant systems of representation involved in formulating and fixing identities.

*The exhibition coincides with InFest: International Artist Run Culture, a Pacific Association of Artist Run Centres event. It is the first in a series of four exhibitions being curated this Spring by Master of Arts candidates in the Critical Curatorial Studies Programme at the University of British Columbia.

Early deadline: April 1, 2004
Final deadline: May 3, 2004

invites submissions of films and videos, in all genres, that
critically examine the concept of 'environment' and challenge
current human/nature relations. Special consideration will be paid to:
-works that push the boundaries of the accepted notions of 'environment'
-works that present cultural perspectives that are under-represented in Canada
-works that will have their world or Canadian premiere at Planet in
Focus: Toronto International Environmental Film & Video Festival

Eligibility Criteria
-Entries must have a release date after 2000.
-Pre-screening copies must be submitted on VHS cassette (NTSC preferred, but PAL also accepted).
-Each entry must be accompanied by a completed entry form and the appropriate entry fee.

run spaces. It takes place in the context of an important
international symposium, InFest: International Artist Run Culture
(www.paarc.ca/infest/)

Para/Site: Open Work presents an opportunity to assess the identity
of Para/Site, not so much as a coherent entity, but rather as a
loose set of `open book' strategies that have always been
mindful of the position of the `curator-artist', as well as the role
the quotidian plays in the work of artists.

This year’s festival includes two writers from Vancouver (Kevin Loring & Anosh Irani), two from Montreal (Marie Barlizo & Vadney S. Haynes), and one from Toronto (David Yee).

In addition to the readings showcase, CrossCurrents will also feature the Tidal Wave series presenting readings by Native Earth and Fu-Gen theatre companies, a poetry reading hosted by The League of Canadian Poets, as well as a free open panel discussion on the topic “Are Artists of Colour Disadvantaged in the Marketplace?”. A gala event to launch the festival with play readings, musical performances, and a reception hosted by Playwrights Guild of Canada will take place on Monday, March 8 at 7:00pm.

SHOWCASE SERIES

Acquiesce by David Yee • March 10
A dying wish brings a young man to Hong Kong to bury the father he never knew. In the days leading up to the funeral, he has to learn about his life, his death, his family ... and himself. Directed by Jean Yoon.

Ballad of Floyd by Kevin Loring • March 13
Floyd wakes up in a bar to find nothing is as he remembers, or as it seems. Trapped in a barroom purgatory, reality begins to unravel around him. Haunted by the memory of his daughter and the ghost of his wife, Floyd struggles to regain some control in the tailspin his life has become. Directed by Jovanni Sy.

The Possession of Fernando Rodriguez by Marie Barlizo • March 17
Mara Rodriguez is reunited with her family in Montreal after a six-year separation. It is more than just language and culture that isolate this Filipino teen -- Mara has also inherited the gift of visions from her ancestors. To fight forces that threaten her family, she uses rituals and traditions passed on from one generation to another, arousing fears and prejudices that threaten to tear her family apart. Directed by Bill Lane.

Blacks Don’t Bowl by Vadney S. Haynes • March 19
As Executive Director of the Montreal Black Association, Frank Simmons was confident about his vision for his community...until he attended a contemporary black art exhibit. What he sees fills him with deep and troubling questions about art, social responsibility, what it means to be black (and whether or not that includes bowling). Directed by Nigel Shawn-Williams.

The Matka King by Anosh Irani • March 20
In a lyrical story that pits human nature against love and chance, a landscape of betrayal and redemption comes to life in the red-light district of Bombay, India. One very powerful eunuch, Top Rani, operates an illicit lottery through his brothel. A gambler who is deeply in debt makes an unexpected wager and the stakes become life and death. Can a fortune-teller and a ten year-old girl beat Top Rani at his own game? Directed by Ken Gass.

The festival launch party will take place on March 8 and will feature readings by Andrew Moodie and Trey Anthony and a musical performance by Nicole Stamp.

In addition to the five public readings, CrossCurrents includes a public forum on March 15, Are Artists of Colour Disadvantaged in the Marketplace? This public round table, hosted by playwright Andrew Moodie, invites discussion on issues of race and gender in the creation and production of theatre. Forum begins at 8pm.

The Tidal Wave series presents readings from Toronto-based companies Native Earth (March 11) and Fu-Gen (March 18). The League of Canadian Poets also presents readings of new works on March 12.

stages, televisions and movie screens. NAAAP chapters, including Toronto, actively promoted the
acclaimed Asian-American film, Better Luck Tomorrow, released this past spring. The aim of ACAF
is to promote Asian voices in Canadian society. After all, artists are the voices of a community.
