This second annual exposition and sale of fine art, with 200 leading artists from across Canada and abroad presenting their work to the public, collectors and dealers alike, is Canada's largest indoor exhibition of its kind, with 20,000 visitors attending.

Toronto Art Expo celebrates the value of the Visual World and the influence it has in our lives.

Special focus this year is given to the Arts of Japan, in both traditional and non traditional contemporary forms, with a special exhibit from the collection of the Consulate General of Japan of prominent Japanese artists from the 50's through to the 70's. Six artists from Japan and several living in Toronto will complete the visual and cultural dialogue.

TAE is sponsoring the visit and demonstration of sacred Tibetan scroll painting by Tenzin Gawa whose family have been the official artists to the Dalai Lamas for three centuries. This along with seven monks creating a sand mandala over the 4 days will take place in our Tibetan art and culture section.

TAE supports community and international initiatives including sight restoration projects in Africa and Asia, the OCAD Scholarship Fund and the work of the Avenue Road Art School with the Metro Toronto Police in inner city schools.

The Toronto Art Expo is about community initiatives, cultural events and top contemporary artists presenting their work. It is truly an 'out of the box' art event, providing enrichment for all who may attend. Toronto Art Expo meets the world.

Opening Gala, Thursday March 18, 5-10 pm

Featuring the world renowned Kyoshi Nagata Kodo Drumming Troupe performing their rigorous percussion marvels. As well, Lamas from Tibet will commence the creation of a sand mandala replete with ceremonial music and give a dramatic and colourful demonstration of their masked dance rituals. Not to be missed! Clearly the Metro Toronto Convention Centre is the place to be this evening, all for the low price of general admission.

Ceremonies commence at 7 pm.

Caravan invites you to help us celebrate one of India’s most vibrant holidays: Holi! This holiday celebrates the beginning of spring and the primal colours that nature brings forth. People from all strata of society join in, forgetting their strifes and differences, and are allowed many liberties, otherwise forbidden. The holiday is also known for people throwing coloured water and powder on each other. It is India’s version of Carnaval!

The 5-member group Galitcha performs a combination of devotional North Indian love songs, as well as high-energy danceable folk tunes, funked up with an edge of jazz and blues. The songs have lyrics in Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi, with instrumentation on harmonium, tabla, sax, flute, among others. Based in Ottawa, and led by Kuljit Sodhi, the group has appeared at various events across North America and North Africa. Galitcha has also collaborated with world-folk artists such as Harry Manx and Oliver Shroer. They have been featured on CBC’s Global Village, and tracks from their first CD Satrang have reached the top of world-music charts across the country.

Vancouver-based CyberRaj, headed by Asian Underground DJ Paul Pahal, and tabla player Stefan Cihelka, will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Prashant and vocalist Sheinagh Anderson to provide Indo-World Dance beats for the second half of the evening. The group was featured on CBC’s ZED-TV in 2004.

The Films of Ann Marie Fleming

History is Relatives:
The Films of Ann Marie Fleming
presented by Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe St., Vancouver
For a complete program, go to http://www.cinematheque.bc.ca/MarchApril04/amf.html

One of Canada’s most distinctive independent filmmaking talents, Vancouver original Ann Marie Fleming has created a remarkably diverse yet remarkably unified range of feature, short, documentary, mockumentary, avant-garde, animated and personal work in the twenty-plus films she has made between Waving (1987) and The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam (2003).

Born in Okinawa, of Chinese and Australian parentage, Fleming grew up in Vancouver, and studied at Simon Fraser University and the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Her films, usually autobiographical, typically highly self-conscious and self-reflexive, delve into personal and family history with a rare blend of irony, pathos, whimsy and humour, even when dealing with the most serious of subjects. Whether working in feature, medium, short or micro-short formats, whether shooting in 16mm, 35mm, video or creating on a computer, the multi-talented Ann Marie Fleming has established herself as one of our most unique, engaging, prolific and gifted film artists. Pacific Cinémathèque is pleased to celebrate her accomplishment with this retrospective.

Exclusive Limited Run!

Albert Schultz and Andy McKim took part in the two-week Performing Arts Specialists Group Invitation Program of The Japan Foundation in December 2003. Amongst the participants from India, New Zealand, South Africa, Hungary, etc., two Torontonians added a special charm and delight to the tour, according to our Japanese sources. Together with Bill Millard of Arts Club Theatre, Vancouver, and Gordon McCall of Centaur Theatre, Montreal, our beloved workhorses of the Toronto theatre scene made such a friendly impression on the Japanese theatre world and enhanced the presence of Canada tremendously.

Curious and active, Albert and Andy's theatre-going ranged from traditional theatre to contemporary creations, including a bold production of Shakespeare by Ninagawa and Canadian plays in Japanese translations. Their cultural experiences extended beyond the theatre, from the bustling Tsukiji mega fish market to the serene Sumo training stable.

Let's hear about their discoveries and adventures from their own voices and what they absorbed in Japan. A selection of their massive 500+ photo collection from their trip will be projected. (Not whole thing, we won't keep you overnight.)

This lecture is presented by The Japan Foundation Toronto, coinciding with the current Exhibition

Room Service

The Fine Art Department at the University of Toronto presents Room Service

An Exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel
Room Nos. 58, 60, 61, 62, 66, and the Art Bar
1214 Queen Street West
Toronto, Ontario

March 19th-27th, 2004
Opening reception: Friday March 19th, 7pm
Hours: March 20th-27th, 12-8pm

website: http://www.fineart.utoronto.ca/thesis/2004/

For Room Service, sixteen emerging artists bring their diverse practices to life within a historical landmark--the Gladstone Hotel. Probing the issues of this transient space, the artists draw on questions that surround the lived and personal experience, identity, history, public vs. private, and traces of what is left behind.

Grouped into six rooms and overflowing into the hallway of the first floor and the Art Bar are site installations, paintings, drawings, sculpture and video. Diverging from, or accenting the historical status of the building exemplifies what new generations of young artists are moving towards: the further examination of art in the everyday or common space. The goals of Room Service are to flesh out the experiential aspects of art-making and how this can reflect and inform the environments that the work was conceptualized in - whether they are physical or theoretical spaces.

The Mendel Art Gallery

Flow: A Festival of Art and Ecology - Call for Submissions
Deadline for submissions June 1, 2004

Flow: A Festival of Art and Ecology is a two-week event that will feature site-specific, media, public, and performance-based work by local, national, and international artists.

In celebration of the Mendel Art Gallery's 40th and the Meewasin Valley Authority's 25th anniversaries, this festival will explore Saskatoon's downtown South Saskatchewan River corridor as a site for the confluence of natural and constructed histories. The Mendel Art Gallery is interested in creating a dialogue with the land (natural and constructed) and riverscape that lie directly behind it.

The chosen artworks will call to attention, either formally or through public intervention, the interrelationships between urban ecology, civic responsibility and usage, and the Canadian wilderness aesthetic.

A jury will select six artists, ranging from emerging to established. Proposal assessment will be based on the artist's ability to address the site-specificity of the project, both in content and production.

For more information, please contact the Mendel's Head of Public and Professional Programs, Alexandra Stratulat at astratulat@mendel.ca or 306.975.8051. Please submit a one or two-page proposal description, installation requirements, curriculum vitae, and covering letter to:
