International Dance Day

Vancouver Celebrates International Dance Day
April 29 (continuing to May 2) Various downtown venues

Information: 604 606 6400 www.thedancecentre.ca

http://iti.unesco.org

Take a stroll around Vancouver’s downtown on International Dance Day on April 29, and you’ll discover a world of dance. Classical East Indian, capoeira, Chinese, contemporary and flamenco are just some of the dance styles to be experienced in performances, workshops and events presented by The Dance Centre, many of them free, at venues including Vancouver Public Library, Scotiabank Dance Centre, and the Roundhouse Community Centre.

Initiated in 1982 by UNESCO, International Dance Day is marked annually on April 29 with events across Canada and around the world. The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), regarded as the founder of modern ballet. Each year The Dance Centre, BC’s resource centre for dance, presents events which celebrate the art form. Executive Director Mirna Zagar says, “this year we are particularly pleased to extend the events over three days, collaborating with DanceArts Vancouver to bring American community dance pioneer Liz Lerman to Vancouver for the first time, and with Asian Heritage Month to present Asian dance workshops”. Other highlights include the Isadora Awards at Crush Champagne Lounge on April 29 at 8pm, an informal celebration of artists who have made an outstanding contribution to dance in BC in the areas of teaching, choreography and performance.

PATTANO PRADESH

PATTANO PRADESH is a new dance interpretation of a short story by India's best-known Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. This fascinating story has been the inspiration for several dance productions, including our own, Land of Cards, which you may have seen a few years ago. Both these productions derive their inspiration from Tagore - they retain the sense of delightful fantasy that characterized the original story, but fundamentally alter, adapt and extends it. In plot development, characterization, dance style, music and choreographic structure, PATTANO PRADESH emerges as a totally new and original production.

PATTANO PRADESH explores the themes of freedom and breaking down barriers in a society divided into rigid social groupings which are characterized by five of India's classical dance forms: Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Mohiniattam, Manipuri and Kathak. It illustrates the transformation of the personal lives of the central characters and the collective transformation of a whole society - symbolized by the integration of dance styles into one common vocabulary.

Presented as part of the Toronto's prestigious Harbourfront Dance Series, PATTANO PRADESH, is sure to be widely attended.
For further information on the Harbourfront production of Pattano Padesh, school shows or our six city tour of Southern Ontario, please visit our website at www.menakathakkardance.org

Anna May Wong

Rediscovering Anna May Wong
at Pacific Cinémathèque, May 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8

"I think I left Hollywood because I died so often"
Anna May Wong

Anna May Wong was Hollywood's first, and remains to this day its only Asian American screen goddess, appearing in more than 50 films and gaining international fame and popularity. In a career that spanned silents, talkies and early television, Anna May Wong worked alongside some of the biggest names of the time, including Douglas Fairbanks and Marlene Dietrich, and appeared in landmark films such as Technicolor's pioneering The Toll of the Sea. But for all her success, her career is also remembered for the restrictions and frustrations imposed by social and Hollywood racism.

Rediscovering Anna May Wong is presented by Pacific Cinémathèque in cooperation with the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society as part of the explorASIAN Asian Heritage Month.

World Premiere of TERRACOTTA WARRIORS during explorASIAN

The 8th Wonder of the World comes to life!

May 4 to 30, 2004

The Centre For Performing Arts
777 Homer Street, Vancouver BC

Join us at the World Premiere of TERRACOTTA WARRIORS during explorASIAN!

The second Action-Musical portrays the historical events surrounding the rule of the Emperor Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China in 221 BC. This show will feature a large cast of Chinese dancers, martial artists, and acrobats. The story, which was written, adapted, and copyrighted in 2002, portrays the fantastic events of the Qin Dynasty as a dream of the terracotta warrior tomb excavator. The haunting story of the emperor is seen through the eyes of his beloved concubine and scheming eunuch. As the most incredible Chinese historical facts are revealed on stage against a background of epic sets and lavish costumes, the audience will marvel at the dance, music and action used to tell a story of power and lust, and of betrayal and forbidden love. Beyond battles and conquests, forbidden love, burning of books, live burial of scholars, and even the building of the Great Wall, the final climax of the Dance of the Terracotta Warriors will be a theatrical event to be remembered for a long time.

Spectacular! 350 Lavish Costumes, 90 Performers, 24 Historical Scenes

Images Off-Screen

For ten meteoric days, from April 15-24, the organizing team of Images Off-Screen focuses a new media lens on 16 installations by 17 artists at 13 venues in downtown Toronto. Audiences are invited to experience the moving image through media art installations, web-based and interactive projects, sound & video works, performances, artists' talks, receptions and the launch party on Friday, April 16 at the Gladstone Hotel.

Since 1995, the Images Festival has presented media art installations in addition to its on-screen program in an ongoing dialogue between the traditional cinematic approach to exhibition and the many innovative and experimental off-screen formats for digital media. This year many of the installation and new media projects investigate time, duration, stasis, urban landscapes, travel and our lived environments.
