Taiwanese Cultural Festival

On September 4th, Taiwanese Cultural Festival will kick off another weekend of award-winning fun at the Plaza of Nations in Vancouver. After two consecutive years of using themes surrounding the traditional and aboriginal cultures in Taiwan, we are very excited to bring to the Vancouverites many new shows and wonderful exhibitions that have never been seen in Canada! This year's theme, "Unleashed!", is the best way to describe a dynamic and vibrant Taiwanese society, which has grown out of the rigid traditions and unjust perceptions.

As usual, this year's festival will provide the popular Taiwanese arts and crafts fair, delicious food fair and exciting games and prizes. I strongly encourage you to get a close look at the programming schedule this year, because there is just too much to do and to see; you simply don’t want to miss anything!

As a three-time CEIA’s Best Cultural Event winner, Taiwanese Cultural Festival will be your best weekend experience I can assure you this summer!

Enjoy the presentation!

Lunchbox Theatre

Lunchbox Theatre announces a call for submissions for their 18th annual new
play development series, The Petro-Canada Stage One Plays 2005.
Lunchbox Theatre is Canada¹s best known one-act play theatre company.
For 30 years now, our plays have offered an hour of exciting entertainment
to Calgary¹s downtown employees, shoppers and visitors.

Each year, through the generous support of Petro-Canada, we are able to
commission and develop six new Canadian one-act plays. We are currently
inviting playwrights from all across Canada to submit outlines or proposals
for new one-act plays for development within this program.
The process begins with the submission of a proposal or outline. A
Lunchbox Theatre selection committee reads and considers each and every
idea. Through an initial selection review, submissions are narrowed down to
a short-list, from which the final participants are chosen. Playwrights are
then offered a commissioning contract.

Each of the selected plays is workshopped, with the participation of a
professional director, dramturg and cast. The process concludes with two
noon-time staged readings and a talk-balk session with the audience.
Submissions must meet the following criteria:
- The applicant must be a Canadian citizen, over the age of 18.
- Outlines or proposals must be no more than 3 pages in length, and can be
for a new idea (not yet written) or a play in development (no plays that
have already been produced will be accepted). Please indicate the current
status of the play (new idea, in first draft form, etc.) If your proposal is
short-listed, you will be asked to submit a current draft of any piece which
is already written.
- The play must be intended to be 50 minutes in length.
- The play must have no more than 6 characters.
- Your submission must include character descriptions and anticipated scenic
requirements (for example: one setting, two settings, interiors, etc.) In
addition to the outline, please include a resume (with name, address,
phone-number and e-mail address) and details of your past experience in the
areas of writing and live theatre.
While Lunchbox Theatre is mostly interested in plays with an emphasis on
humour, we are also interested in explorations of ethno-Canadian lifestyles
and experiences, docu-dramas, revues, small-scale musicals and other
innovative forms.

Applicants may submit as many proposals as they wish.
If your submission is selected, you will be offered a commissioning
contract, which includes your participation in a one-week workshop at
Lunchbox Theatre in the spring of 2005. Travel and accommodation will be
provided for all out-of-town playwrights.

Deadlines:
- Outlines must be submitted on or before September 30, 2004
- Final selections will be made by November 1, 2004
- First Draft due January 15, 2005
- Workshop draft due April 1, 2005
- Workshops will be held between April 25th and May 7th, 2005

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Sunday, September 26 from 10:00am – 6:00 pm
Admission by Donation. Everyone Welcome.

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden will host a Mid-Autumn Moon Festival to celebrate the second biggest event in the Chinese calendar. We invite all the diverse “families” that make up our multicultural community to join us for a variety of family-oriented activities on Sunday, September 26, from 10:00am until 6:00pm, including mooncake (traditional round pastry served for this festival filled with red bean, lotus paste, egg yolks, and nuts) and tea sampling thanks to Keefer Bakery, lanterns, traditional Chinese music by the Sincere Lam Guzheng Ensemble (Chinese zither instruments), colorful dancing by Rhythms of Borneo, the telling of Chinese moon myths, hands-on paper folding and cutting activities, as well as demonstrations of different forms of kung fu by the Kin Fun Athletic Group, Chinese painting techniques, and other cultural showcases. Everyone is welcome to participate in this ancient cultural experience.

The moon has long been an object of human worship in civilizations around the world; for the Chinese, it was no different. Serving as a timepiece for the ancient Chinese in times of planting and harvesting, the moon was considered a deity of utmost reverence. In Chinese culture today, the roundness of the full moon makes it of great significance, for the complete circle symbolizes togetherness, harmony, and family unity.

Thus, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar when the moon is closest to the earth and appears larger and brighter than during any other time of the year, Chinese families around the world gather to celebrate the moon in a 1000-year-old tradition known as the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. This ancient tradition allows time for the family to unite in a perfect circle like the moon - unbreakable, never-ending, and harmonious.

Anime Evolution 2004

Anime Evolution started as a culminated effort between the local anime clubs
within the Lower Mainland. In an effort to share our love of Asian Culture
and Entertainment, we have slowly built over the last six years a festival
open to the general public. From a small semesterly public showing, this
event has now grown to a full fledged 3 day event, outgrowing the original 2
theatre anime viewing it originally was.

To show our appreciation for the support shown to us by the public and to
the city, we have and are continuing to support a local charity, to which
partial proceeds will be donated. Anime Evolution was originally founded by:
the Altered Reality Club (SFU), the UBC Anime Club (UBC),
the Vancouver Japanese Animation Society (VJAS), and
VSWAT (Vancouver Sleep-is-for-Wimps Anime Team).

In 2003, Anime Evolution decided to grow into a full fledge anime convention
that we've all grown to love. Expanding to three programming tracks, 8
viewing rooms, industry guests, dealers room, dance, cosplay, Anime
Evolution was a huge success and we received 50% more attendees
than we were planning for!

For 2004, Anime Evolution will continue to grow to satiate the growing
appetite for what is quickly becoming mainstream entertainment in North
American culture! Adding onto what we built in 2003 including asking
Industry Guests from overseas to join us and share in our celebration!
Uniting Anime fandom in the Pacific Northwest is one of our ulterior motive
and we'll continue to promote & celebrate what Asian Entertainment, what's
quickly becoming part of our popular culture!

Anime Evolution will be taking place Aug 20 to 22 at:
Simon Fraser Burnaby Campus - Burnaby, BC

The Last Empress is an historically accurate portrayal of the
fascinating life of Korea's beloved Queen Min and her struggle to
steer the hermit kingdom known as The Land of Morning Calm toward
modernization. We witness her forging close ties with western
nations to keep Japan at bay as it strives to take command of
her country, and her eventual demise at the sword of Japanese samurai.

Written, composed, and directed by some of the most prominent
theatrical talents in Korea, The Last Empress is a feast for the
eyes and ears with lavish costumes of royal splendor, stunning sets
depicting the sumptuous palace on a dynamic counter-rotating stage,
eclectic dances including Flower Coronet and Shaman dancing, and a
captivating score that is a perfect blend of East meets West. The
extraordinary cast of 45 from Korea is headed by Tae Won Yi, Olivier
Award nominee for her work in the London production of The King and
I. In addition to the 40 dedicated staff members from Korea, 23

A WALK WITH WOMAN WARRIORS: A RE-MAPPING OF ACTIVISM

August 28, 2004 (10 am - 5 pm)
Strathcona Community Center, 601 Keefer Street, Vancouver
Coast Salish Territories - Room A130
Enter at the 594 E. Pender Street Entrance.
Parking available in this lot.

A Walk With Woman Warriors: A Re- Mapping of Activism is a one-day
workshop/panel discussion series with presentations by Wendy Au,
Midge Ayukawa, Dorothy Christian, Cecilia Diocsan, Agnes Huang,
Larissa Lai, Bessie Lee, Jo-Anne Lee, Xiaoping Li, Darlene Marzari,
Cindy Chan Piper, Cease Wyss, and Rita Wong.

This free event opens dialogue and bridges generations of west coast
women activists, starting with but not necessarily limited to East
Asian Canadian communities. How do struggles for place connect to
struggles for identity and representation? What connects social and
cultural activists across the decades? Come out and hear about the
amazing contributions "East Asian Canadian" women activists and our
allies have made to Vancouver and to Canada.

Brainstorm with us about how to build a stronger movement for social
change today. The morning's session takes its departure from
research undertaken by former Strathcona resident, Professor Jo-Anne
Lee of the University of Victoria, who is reclaiming histories of
women who were leaders in the struggle to save Strathcona from
destruction during the late 1960s and 70s. Many of the original
women leaders are now gone; however, this event marks, honors,
recovers and re-contexualizes the overlooked roles of ethnic
minority women, and their voices and creative tactics of culturally
hybrid forms of grassroots resistance in struggles such as
Strathcona as well as many other social justice efforts.

Without this history, Asian Canadians will continue to be
represented and perceived as always "new" arrivals and not already
here, rooted on the soil. At the same time, Asian Canadians must
come to terms with what it means to inherit and decolonize the
cultures of "Canada." Today's activism, acknowledged or
unacknowledged, owes a debt to the groundbreaking work and
dedication of earlier women's efforts, and this one day event hopes
to provide a grounding, a context, and a renewal of energy and a
catalyst for building a network to support those of us working
towards imaginative and sustainable social and cultural change in
our various spaces and capacities. We hope this is the first of
many such events.

SHIFT

Exhibition: Present - August 21, 2004
Centre A - The Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
849 Homer Street, Vancouver BC

"Shift" brings together works by six local emerging artists
Eli Bornowsky, Leanne Coughlin, Jenny Hsieh, Toni Latour, Heidi
Nagtegaal, and K.C. Solano) that explore themes of impermanence,
flux, and adaptation. This exhibition addresses the nature of
reality, not so much as a coherent experience, but rather as a
medley of encounters. "Shift" is the culminating project of Centre
A's Summer 2004 Curatorial Internship Program.

The exhibition begins with Eli Bornowsky's audio composition
installed in the gallery's lobby. Just inside Centre A's main
entrance hangs Jenny Hsieh's large drawing assemblage. Heidi
Nagtegaal's knitted interventions are dispersed throughout the
exhibition. Her wool cozies cover some of the gallery's electronic
devices. The projection room features Leanne Coughlin's video
collages, while K.C. Solano's portraits-on-mantelpiece installation
appears on a nearby wall. Finally, Toni Latour's photo-based project
spreads prominently in the front gallery.

Revolution - Canadian Premiere

Down with the status quo! Rise up, all laugh radicals! The Revolution has begun! Margaret Cho is back and she’s fierce, funny, flirty... and absolutely fabulous in gold lamé.

Filmed live at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles during her sold-out 2003 national tour, Cho delivers another riotous performance that irreverently attacks the status quo. From loser ex-boyfriends and body image, to the effects of a persimmon diet and George Bush’s inability to pronounce nuclear, Cho tackles the homophobia, sexism and racism running rampant in American culture with characteristic panache.

As Cho said following the close of her latest tour, “I named it Revolution because we really need one right now. Plus, I think that Prince’s backup band before the New Power Generation gets routinely ignored.”

Constantly toying with gender, race, sexuality and class, Cho never hesitates to delve into the political. Her earlier comic style, likened to Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor, has evolved into a comedic call-to-arms comparable to Al Franken and Michael Moore. Revolution, including warm-up act by the openly gay comedian Bruce Daniels, is full of socially conscious opinions and side-splitting commentaries on discrimination. Part lecture, part drag show, part evangelical sermon, Cho’s comedy is outspoken, outrageous and outright hilarious.

Audiences will also be glad to see the return of Cho’s unfailing ability to perfectly channel anyone from her mother to Anna Nicole Smith to Condoleeza Rice. Following the sold-out screening of her last film, Notorious C.H.O. at the 2002 Vancouver Queer Film + Video Festival, Revolution is sure to be one comedic uprising you won’t want to miss.

BC Almanac

BC Almanac has launched a new book project.

You may recall we asked for examples of Great British Columbians
recently on the open line. Nominations included scientist David Suzuki,
conservationists Roderick Haig-Brown and Bert Brink, and hero Terry Fox.

After the show nominations kept coming including:
Gold Rush Photographer CD Hoy
Mountain explorer and wilderness educator John Clarke
Strongman Ivan Hepburn
Nisga'a leader Frank Calder

With such a rich history we know there are many more notable British Columbians.
So here's the pitch:

In about 200 words tell us about someone from past or present who you
think qualifies as a Great British Columbian.

And there's a twist. You can include Dreamers, Rogues and Renegades -
some of the eccentric or colourful characters of our past. This is
afterall, the province where someone who renamed himself Amor de Cosmos
managed to become premier.

We asked sports columnist Jim Kearney to come up with a few. Track star
Percy Williams is at the top of his list. Jim calls him "BC's greatest
ever athletic performer - and the only Canadian to win two gold medals
in individual events at the Olympic Games." He won both the 100 and 200
metres races at Amsterdam in 1928.

We'll create some interesting profiles that represent the entire
province. And if your submission is used, we'll give you a free copy of
the book. Net proceeds will go to the Friends of the British Columbia
Archives - a group dedicated to preserving and documenting BC history.

filmmaking. The festival presents both Juried and Audience Choice awards.
